半边楼

Original title

"Half-Side Building" is a 22-episode television drama co-directed by Long Tu and Gou Liang, written by Yan Yiyun, and starring Yang Lixin, Xu Zhengyun, and others. It was produced in 1992 by the Propaganda Department of the CPC Shaanxi Provincial Committee in collaboration with Shaanxi Television. Modeled on the faculty housing block known as "Half-Side Building" in the northwest corner of Northwest University, the series depicts the entanglements among five families at a university in northwestern China in the mid-1980s over issues such as professional title evaluations and housing shortages. Through the lives of more than a dozen intellectuals, including Huang Geng and Yuan Mei, the drama portrays the survival difficulties faced by university communities in the early years of reform and opening up. In the story, "Half-Side Building" has part of its structure demolished due to cracked foundations, a detail that reflects the circumstances of intellectuals in that particular era. The series won first prize for a full-length drama at the 13th National Flying Apsaras Awards and the second "Five-One Project" Award.
