(ENGLISH) There are war films that focus on strategy, sides, or victories. This one goes in a different direction. From the very beginning, it’s clear that the core of the story isn’t the battlefield itself, but the moral stubbornness of a man who refuses to carry a weapon, even when everything around him collapses. That choice, simple yet radical, is what holds the film together and sets it apart within such a well-worn genre. The premise is powerful: a conscientious objector who wants to serve in World War II as a medic, saving lives without firing a single shot. The film doesn’t mock that position or soften it; it presents it head-on, with all its contradictions and with a very strong religious foundation. Mel Gibson’s hand is unmistakable here, along with his beliefs and his extreme way of understanding faith. It may be uncomfortable for some viewers, but it’s also part of the film’s raw strength. When the war truly begins, the film shifts gears. The combat scenes are brutal, physical, and exhausting. There’s no clean heroism or polished epic imagery — only mud, blood, shattered bodies, and a constant sense of horror. Gibson has no interest in subtlety, but he undeniably captures the chaos and violence of the front line with overwhelming intensity. Andrew Garfield carries the weight of the main character with conviction. His performance blends faith, innocence, and resilience in a way that feels grounded rather than sanctified. The supporting characters mainly serve as reflections of the moral conflict rather than fully developed arcs, but they work within that framework. The film’s central paradox is unavoidable: a pacifist message delivered through extreme violence. Gibson condemns war while filming it as a visceral, almost hypnotic hell. That contradiction may clash for some, but it also prevents the film from feeling safe or complacent. It doesn’t tell you what to think — it forces you to sit with the discomfort. It’s not a perfectly balanced film, but it is powerful, unsettling, and deeply impactful. A different kind of war story, driven by faith, obsession, and sacrifice, that leaves a mark even if you don’t fully share its worldview.
