Quizá otro día me habría entrado mejor. Yo no conecté. (ENGLISH) *War Machine* bored me quite a lot. I should admit that I probably did not watch it on the best possible day, because I was already tired and distracted, and that always affects the experience. Even taking that into account, however, the film never really pulled me in. There were long stretches where I was not even entirely sure what it wanted me to focus on or where it was going. Not because the story is especially complicated, but because the tone never settles. It wants to be a satire of the Afghanistan war, a political comedy, a criticism of the American military system and, occasionally, a more serious war film. The problem is that those elements seem to compete with each other instead of working together. Sometimes we are apparently supposed to laugh. Sometimes we are supposed to be angry. And sometimes we simply wait for something to happen. Brad Pitt plays the general as an obvious caricature. The walk, voice, posture and entire physical performance are exaggerated from the beginning. I understand what he is doing, but it did not really work for me. Pitt commits completely to the character. This is not his usual charismatic leading-man performance. He adopts a strange physicality and a permanently intense expression that turn the general into a symbol of a military structure convinced that every problem can be solved through more strategy, more troops and more confidence. The idea makes sense. But a caricature sustained for more than two hours needs to be genuinely funny or genuinely sharp. For me, it was neither. The film is built around an interesting contradiction: trying to win a war in which the political and social conditions make it almost impossible to define what winning actually means. The general believes enough resources and the right plan can transform the situation. Around him are politicians, soldiers, advisers and allied governments operating according to completely different priorities. That should be where the satire becomes powerful. It is there, but it feels too scattered. Meetings, trips, statements and strategic discussions are meant to build a sense of bureaucratic absurdity, but too often they simply make the movie feel painfully slow. The narration does not help. There is so much explanation, ironic commentary and exposition that sometimes it feels as though the film is constantly telling us why a scene is absurd instead of allowing us to discover that ourselves. And then another problem appears: if the comedy does not work for you, there is not much left to hold onto. There is not enough tension for it to work as a war film. Not enough emotion for a drama. And it was not funny enough for me to sustain itself as satire. That describes my experience through much of the runtime: I could understand the criticism underneath everything, but I was not particularly interested in following it. There are better moments. Whenever the film moves away from caricature and gets closer to the actual consequences of military decisions, it improves. There is something darker and more interesting in the distance between those who design wars from offices and those who ultimately have to live through them. Unfortunately, that material arrives too late and occupies too little of the film. Visually, it is well made and the cast is full of talented actors. This is not a careless production. The problem is that everything sounds more interesting on paper than it feels while watching it. Maybe on another day I would have connected with it more. Possibly. But a film also has to wake you up when you arrive tired, rather than asking for two hours of patience while you wait to connect. I never did. *War Machine* tries to explain the absurdity of an unwinnable war and ends up trapped in another kind of absurdity: a satire that was not especially funny, a war film that barely interested me as a war film, and a story that spent too long making me wonder where it was going. Brad Pitt works very hard. So did I.
