(ENGLISH) I had read so many enthusiastic opinions about *Santa Clarita Diet* that I started it expecting one of the best comedies of recent years: strange, brilliant, original and consistently hilarious. The problem with those expectations is that finding a pleasant but rather simple comedy becomes a major disappointment.
The premise is amusing. Sheila is a suburban real-estate agent who suddenly discovers that she is dead, although she can still walk, talk and continue her apparently normal life. The only complication is that she now needs to eat human flesh. Her husband Joel and daughter Abby try to adapt while searching for an explanation and a possible cure.
The combination of suburban family life, zombies, murder and ordinary problems had enormous potential. Some early moments work very well. The contrast between the couple’s extreme politeness and the horrible things they do can be funny, while the calm residential setting suits the story.
Drew Barrymore is likable and fully commits to the absurd tone. She clearly enjoys playing Sheila’s transformation from a restrained woman into someone impulsive, sexually liberated and completely unpredictable. Timothy Olyphant is the strongest part of the series for me. His panic, nervous energy and attempts to pretend everything is normal carry many scenes.
Their marriage also works surprisingly well. This is not a story about a supernatural event destroying a couple, but about two people trying to remain together while learning how to dismember bodies and hide evidence. Their loyalty can be funny and even touching.
Unfortunately, the series rarely made me laugh. There are amusing situations and some good lines, but I expected much more. The comedy repeatedly uses the same formula: somebody says something horrific in a polite tone, Joel panics, Sheila behaves as though everything is normal, and blood appears everywhere. It is surprising at first and repetitive later.
The story is not especially complex either. Each problem leads to another similar problem, another corpse, another lie or another character connected to Sheila’s condition. The mythology expands, but it does not always make the series more interesting. Sometimes it simply extends a premise that might have worked better with fewer episodes.
The supporting characters have energy, particularly Abby and Eric, although their teenage storylines occasionally feel disconnected from the main series. Some episodes stop moving while everyone repeats the same arguments and makes increasingly foolish decisions.
I do not mind that the show is exaggerated or lightweight. The problem is that it is not nearly as clever as its reputation suggests. The satire of suburban life, marriage, real estate and appearances is present, but never develops very far. It is easy to watch, yet also rather superficial.
The unresolved cancellation makes the experience less satisfying. After three seasons of developing its mythology, the story stops with many questions still open.
*Santa Clarita Diet* is not bad. It has a funny premise, two appealing leads, good pacing and several effective moments. But I never found the horror-comedy masterpiece so many people had promised.
Watchable, occasionally entertaining and little more. The enormous hype ultimately worked against it.
